Capto Consulting - Insights: "A Beautiful Mind, Nash introduced the distinction between cooperative games, in which binding agreements can be made, and non-cooperative games, where binding agreements are not always feasible. He developed an equilibrium concept for non-cooperative game scenarios that is called the Nash Equilibrium.
Simply stated, he proved that companies that work together will discover that the sum of the parts can be better when combined effectively than if they work at cross-purposes. "

As a plant slowly an imperceptibly moves towards the light, so does society move towards what our social leaders follow. Ask the Rabbi, JewishAnswers.org
Ask the Rabbi, JewishAnswers.org: "At what age does God consider a child to be responsible for his/her own soul and not the parents?
Answer: That is an important question. A young boy begins his accountability at thirteen, while a young girl begins at twelve. However, according to most authorities, God withholds punishment of any wrong doing until the individual is twenty, essentially giving a young teenager time to “get their act together.”
Question: What source do “most authorities” use to come to this conclusion?
Answer: There are three primary sources for this conclusion. The Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Shabbat 89b, Jerusalem Talmud, Tractate Bikurim Chapter 4 paragraph 1 and the Midrash Rabbah Section Chayeh Sarah chapter 58. Maimonides (Commentary to Mishnah, Sanhedrin 7:4) and Nachmanides (in his writings “Gate of Payment”) both quote these citations. The main debate amongst the authorities is whether the quotations only apply to spiritual excises or all forms of punishment."

Divrei Ben Zoma
Divrei Ben Zoma: "Pascal's famous wager and since its flaws are plainly clear to me, I find it difficult to comprehend why many theologians use this as a defense of their faith (sometimes a main defense). The obvious problems seem to have been discussed ad nauseam such as the ignoring of many other mutually exclusive possible worlds in which it would be "infinitely" detrimental to hold a belief in any particular deity and may be "infinitely" beneficial to hold no theistic beliefs whatsoever.
I would like to bring up another possible problem with Pascal’s Wager, namely the issue of something being "infinitely" beneficial and "infinitely" detrimental. It is on the basis of appealing to some sort of "infinite" reward/punishment that Pascal argues that no benefits gained from a life of non-belief in a particular deity or religion (particularly Christianity for Pascal) can offset the potential gain or loss in the afterlife. I contend that such an understanding is not necessarily the case."

Sitting on the Fence
Sitting on the Fence: "because I believed that the Torah was true and therefore felt that it was wrong not to keep it. Despite the tremendous difficulties that it involved, I took on one mitzvah at a time until I was fully shomer mitzvos, or since of course no one can keep all the taryag mitzvos, as observant as possible.
As tznius--or to a lesser extent, the equivalent for men, yiddishe levush--is the ultimate external representation of ones beliefs to the world, I viewed this mitzvah as particularly important. Therefore, I was extremely bothered by frum people who did not keep tznius properly. I viewed frum people who believed in the halachic system, including the principle of "minhag yisrael Torah hee", yet dressed in a manner totally inconsistent with halacha, as the ultimate hypocrites."

Three Jews, Four Opinions
Three Jews, Four Opinions: "On the other hand, liberal Judaism far too often reduces this great and complex moral and spiritual legacy to simplistic ethical rules, trivialized rituals, and childish stories. An impoverished religious core is often surrounded by religiously peripheral - albeit important - issues like cultural Judaism, support for Israel, the Holocaust, anti-semitism, and social action."
Rationally Speaking
Rationally Speaking: "Nussbaum was conducted by Solomon Asch to explore the effects of conformity. In this case subjects were shown, for instance, images of lines of different lengths and were asked to make judgments about their relative lengths. Unbeknownst to them, a number of confederates were pretending to participate in the experiment, but in reality gave coordinated wrong answers to the questions. Astonishingly, a number of subjects began to agree with the confederates, even though it was very clear that they were agreeing to the wrong answer."
Essentialist Explanations
Essentialist Explanations: "This page comprises a list of 1009 "essentialist explanations" of the form "Language X is essentially language Y under conditions Z". I have edited some entries for uniformity, clarity, or good English. The entries are grouped for convenience rather than correctness. In particular, fictional languages belonging to actual language families are grouped with their natural language relatives. New contributions are solicited, especially for American and African languages. No flames, please.
Note: Entries attributed to me (John Cowan) are often ones that I have heard or read somewhere, or ones that were suggested by other people's contributions but heavily modified by me.

Finding the Spark in Creative Writing | Education.com
Finding the Spark in Creative Writing | Education.com: "It’s no secret: creative writing is challenging. While older writers have picked up techniques over time to jumpstart the creative process and combat bouts of writer’s block, kids lack the firsthand experience and a well of tools to propel them into a world of imagination. How, then, can you help spark your child’s creative inner flame?
“In my experience, I find that students get stuck because they don't have a ton of experiences and reflective reference points in their lives yet,” says Barbara Whitlock, a teacher of online classes. While accumulating these life encounters takes time, there are ways, in the meantime, to encourage kids to experience the world around them and infuse what they see into their writing. Here are some ideas from teachers and writers to help spark the imagination."

Ashton Kutcher Keeps the Lines of Communication Open with His Social Media Presence — BlogWorld & New Media Expo Blog: " he simply says “The timing was right” and how by taking this job, he could still be there for his family. He went on to say that after really breaking down the decision, there were more rewards than risks. The risk? “I was stepping into a media frenzy”, he said.
But given the fact that Kutcher has 7.6 million followers on Twitter and is so active in social media (I still remember staying up way past my bedtime to watch him reach 1 million Twitter followers before CNN. That was so much fun), he felt he could keep the lines of communication open and set the record straight anytime he needed to."

I spend a good deal of thought and time explaining these details because even though I might hold myself to a standard which requires a mindfulness in doing the mitzvot, it may indeed be possible, and maybe even likely that there are those who in their observance will place a greater emphasis on the “how to” component of the performance of the mitzvah as opposed to the why one performs the mitzvah and as to the proper thought which one should have while performing the mitzvah.

What is the cheapest, easiest way to set up your own website?: "I know that several hubbers here set up separate web sites under domain names they own themselves. I would appreciate any feedback or advice on the best way to do this especially for people (like me) who aren't total techies but do have basic web experience.
Which web hosting services do you recommend and why? Is it worth it going through the trouble of setting up and owning one's own site, or is someone like me (that is, someone who isn't a web designer or tech support expert) better off just using sites like Hub Pages to generate income?"

Collaborative Partnerships | IP Daily.biz: "essential problem with my communication style is that unfounded pessimism, and suggestions to redirect are really a very simple code which, thankfully I have uncoded for my own use. Normally pessimism is unfounded primarily because, it is the prevailing attitude. There is nothing novel nor unique when someone shares an idea with some with great entusiasm and belief primarily to have it shot down because the person who its being told to really does not believe in bringing a new business into existence unless of course the person who is doing the presenting has experience and a track record."

Help Wanted: Small Businesses Need Skilled Workers | Fox Small Business Center
Help Wanted: Small Businesses Need Skilled Workers | Fox Small Business Center: "With 14 million Americans out of work, it might be surprising to hear that employers are having trouble filling certain positions.
Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows 2.7 million jobs remained unfilled in the U.S. in August, and employers are reporting having a hard time finding skilled workers to add to their payroll.
ManpowerGroup's 2011 Talent Shortage Survey, released earlier this summer, found that 34% of employers are experiencing difficulties filling positions due to lack of available talent. Of this group, 24% of employers said they aren't finding candidates available in their markets, and 22% reported applicants lack the technical competencies or "hard" skills required "

From 1934 to 1942, he produced a body of work for Harper's Bazaar, photographing personalities in the society, entertainment, and literary worlds as well as the fashions of Chanel, Schiaparelli, Molyneux, featured with his own artwork and those of his friends Constantin Brancusi and Alberto Giacometti. The Liberty Papers
The Liberty Papers: "red flag no matter who the president is or what your political persuasion. President Obama is demanding that congress pass his “American Jobs Act” in front of supportive crowds of people who I am sure have taken the time to read the whole bill and understand its contents. This bill should be passed “immediately” and with “No games, no politics, no delays,” so sayeth our dear leader.
I can’t help but think of another piece of legislation that had to be passed “immediately” and “without delay” nearly ten years ago in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The piece of legislation I am referring to of course was the USA PATRIOT Act. I mean what’s not to like? The bill has the words “USA” and “PATRIOT” in them and would make our country safer because the law would give law enforcement the tools needed to fight terrorism."

The album is another in a long line of collaborations with composers such as Phillip Glass, Terry Riley, and Pēteris Vasks. And like any good instrumental ensemble, they've covered Hendrix, Sigur Ros, and Tom Waits. Oh, and they've been on Sesame Street. [more inside]

Our Blogrolling Policy | Popehat
Our Blogrolling Policy | Popehat: "Our blogroll contains two arbitrary categories: bloggers, and adoption blogs. “Bloggers” is self-explanatory. Ken, who is interested in the subject of international adoption and writes about it occasionally, maintains the “Adoption blogs” category. A former category, “Friends,” consisted fellow travelers, hobbyists, and people we know, actually or in the internet sense, who may or may not have been bloggers. That category was folded up and removed, because it implied two things which may have been untrue: that we weren’t “friends” in the internet sense with others on our blogroll (sometimes we are), or that our “friends” were more “little buddies,” whose sites we linked out of a sense of obligation. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Each site on our blogroll stands, lives, or dies on its own merits."

Lamed Vav Tzadikim « TheWritersCafe.org: "When I was in high school, I had a teacher who taught us about the nature of the element of silver in a class called Photo Science. He mentioned that one could never really see silver, because it was an element that was sensitive to light, the very moment the light hit the silver it would be changed. I can even recall the hand gesture my teacher made when he explained the concept."

Finding and Keeping your Bashert by Rabbi Shafier: "a good marriage isn’t necessarily a match of two similar individuals. It is a union of a man and woman, vastly different in temperament, emotionality, frame of reference, and priorities, each one with different strengths and weaknesses. In a successful marriage, the couple completes one another, so that his deficiencies are compensated for by her strong points, her shortcomings filled in by his positive attributes, and the whole is much greater than the parts."

International terrorist group targets nanotech researchers – Boing Boing: " Craig Cormick—the public awareness manager at Australia's Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, and the person who invited me to the 6th Science Center World Congress—leaned over during a conference session and showed me this story on his blackberry. I had to double check and make sure it wasn't a sketchy email forward.
But the truth is that, sometimes, anti-science sentiment coalesces into violent attacks on scientists themselves. That's happened to researchers who work with animal models in the United States. And it's also happening to researchers around the world who are working with nanotechnology. The threat seems to be particularly prevalent in Mexico. In manifestos, the terrorists have said that they're attempting to prevent scientists from inventing self-replicating nanobots that could turn the entire world into "grey goo.""

אור לגויים אחרים. אומה של כוהנים.
We the Jewish people are nation of priests, of Kohanim, We are a light unto the other nations.
If we as G-d’s chosen people give up on our land, on our rights and each other, then you can pretty much expect the other nations to follow suit. In biblical time it was Yosef, who sustained the entire planet because of his wisdom. We can not allow unwise leaders, or rabble rousing political activists to control our destiny.
The so called United Nations is clearly not what they may once have been. Perhaps they represent the poor or downtrodden, or perhaps they are simply wallowing in self interest. When all the nations of come to feel the pinch of an economic decline, the most obvious direction to turn to see who is pulling the political strings, is to take a look at the nation with the deepest pockets, and the most liquid of all assest."

Parshat Nitzavim: The Key to Choosing Life
Parshat Nitzavim: The Key to Choosing Life: " Netzavim God sets three choices before us. The unit itself begins with the word re'eh ("see") implying that the choices to follow all have to do with sight. We may choose between life and death, good and bad, and blessing and curse. All of these choices are incorporated into the final exhortation of this unit of verses:
...and you shall choose life
Choosing the positive over the negative is always ultimately the choice of life. The negative side of reality defines the positive, puts it in proportion and gives it balance. The ultimate purpose of evil is to be incorporated into the good, which it reinforces. (More on this in Rabbi Ginsburgh's audio lecture on the Torah portion of Re'eh). Nevertheless, we always strive to manifest the positive in reality."

Torah and Science: Scientific Progress from the Geocentric to the Heliocentric Descriptions of the Solar System: " God that sees man (on earth) as the center, with God, as it were, revolving around man and caring for all of man's needs; or perceiving God as the center, whereby man is obligated to God and His commandments. This philosophical perspective is well-illustrated by a second story.
There was once a Hassidic fund-raiser who set out to raise funds for a worthy cause. Knowing that in certain towns the Misnagdim (opposers of Hassidism) who lived there did not welcome Hassidim, who were considered a near-heretic cult, the Hassid took pains to disguise his Hassidic behavior, realizing that otherwise he would be thrown out of town without a penny. On passing through one such town, he posed as usual as a misnaged. His disguise paid off and he received generous donations, however one of the leaders of the community got inkling that maybe this fundraiser was actually a hassid. In order to try to discover his real identity, he went over to the hassid and asked him very bluntly, "What do you have to say about this Hassidic cult?" The hassid thought for a moment and replied, "The cult"

Torah and Science: Scientific Progress from the Geocentric to the Heliocentric Descriptions of the Solar System: "Copernicus, initiated heliocentricity and totally negated geocentricity with his mathematical equations, this new theory did not reach the general public until several centuries later, in the time of one of the great Hassidic masters, the Ruzhiner Rebbe.
When disciples of the Holy Ruzhiner, as he is called in Chabad tradition, heard of this apparently heretical scientific discovery that had turned the world inside-out, as it were, they brought the news to their Rebbe, probably anticipating his absolute denial that such a phenomenon could ever be reconciled with true Torah teachings and that anyone who believed such a thing was an heretic."

It is often asked how the Torah deals with empirically proven scientific discoveries that seem to contradict the traditional teachings of Judaism.
Some of the most blatant of these apparent contradictions are paramount in astronomy. For instance, we find that in the Torah the universe is considered geocentric, with all the heavenly bodies, the sun, the stars and the moon revolving around the earth, whereas modern science clearly teaches that the earth is actually revolving around the sun, the solar system being heliocentric."

I was raised not to judge people by narrow standards, but was rather taught to try to understand the other persons perspective. Not everybody I come across these days shares this outlook of mine. In fact I am starting to believe that qualities such as being non-judgmental are relatively rare.
The other idea I wanted to share is that in our Torah we are taught some absolute values which we must strive to uphold. However we as a Jewish nation are a complex group. We will not always agree on all things, in fact it more likely that we will disagree about almost everything. It is a cornerstone of the American system that people are allowed to express themselves and believe what they want to believe."

The "fill-in-the-blank" in the LAT story is bathtub death, but I've also seen pool drownings, kitchen accidents, and gardening mishaps used to make the case that we overreact -- and overspend -- when protecting ourselves from terrorism. The story frames the question this way:
A decade after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, federal and state governments are spending about $75 billion a year on domestic security, setting up sophisticated radio networks, upgrading emergency medical response equipment, installing surveillance cameras and bombproof walls, and outfitting airport screeners to detect an ever-evolving list of mobile explosives."

Renewing Ourselves & Our Visions - My Jewish Learning: "Kol Nidre (the first prayer recited on the eve of Yom Kippur) serves to annul all existing vows and prepare us to begin the New Year with a clean slate. The Al Chet prayer enumerates the specific ways we have missed the mark.

Water Over Rocks
Water Over Rocks: "taking another look at the Mishnah, an early collection of rabbinic law, and in particular I'm interested in early forms of ethical and moral mandate to care for the poor. In the first several tractates--Brachot, Peah, and Demai--we find that care for the poor and our obligations to others economic well-being are expressed through the tithing of food and agriculture--a Biblical commandment that was honed and refined by the Sages, living nearly 1500 years after Moses received Torah from God on Mount Sinai.
One question that is often on my mind as I look at these ancient texts--especially today, when the latest Republican Presidential candidate Rick Perry likens the payment of taxes to a system of slavery under Pharaoh--is whether the Sages would have found this adamant opposition to taxes as onerous as certain religio-political leaders like Governor Perry do. Their worlds are so different and nearly impossible to compare but nevertheless, it's a useful exercise."

Rambam Yeshiva of NJ expected to open in September | Middlesex News | NJJN: "Almost immediately after the news broke on April 12 that Moshe Aaron Yeshiva High School in South River was planning to close its doors, a group of parents sprang into action to “fill a dire need.”
Within a few weeks, they had devised a plan to establish a new high school, made an offer on a building site, lined up a head of school, recruited more than 50 volunteers to head committees and other functions, and raised about $200,000 in cash, pledges, and in-kind donations to launch the Rambam Yeshiva of New Jersey.
“There’s tremendous interest and we have a lot of dedicated individuals,” said finance committee chair and building committee cochair Dr. Richard Kleinmann of Highland Park, who explained the urgency behind the swift response to the MAYHS announcement (see related article)."

Frum Find The Place To Find All Things Frum (Blog): New school on the block - The Jewish Standard: "The Jewish Standard
New school on the block - The Jewish Standard: "Amid a turbulent economy, an increasing number of day-school parents are suffering sleepless nights wondering how to scrape up enough money to cover tuition fees of $15,000 or more per child. Some parents are even opting out of day schools altogether.
Lauren Ariev Gellman understands their predicament. As the mother of three elementary-school-aged children, she was often frustrated by the high cost of her children’s day school and the relatively mediocre education it offered.
Instead of complaining, Gellman, of Highland Park, sought a solution. Her response to the “yeshiva tuition crisis” is the Pre-Collegiate Learning Center of New Jersey for eighth through 12th-graders, which will open at the East Brunswick Jewish Center in September.
The nondenominational Jewish school will offer a full curriculum of general and Judaic studies, including many self-paced individual-learning opportunities. The annual tuition, in contrast to many area Jewish high schools that cost upward of $20,000, will be $5,000.""

Higher tech, lower cost is goal of ‘future’ school - The Jewish Standard
Higher tech, lower cost is goal of ‘future’ school - The Jewish Standard: "“The time has long since passed for there to be an alternative to the $15-17,000 it costs to send a child to a Jewish day school.”
“We have a sophisticated financial model,” the founders said in an e-mail, “that indicates that tuition will likely be in the $8,000 to $9,000 range, based on inputs including salaries, building rental, insurance, etc. A LOT of work has gone into that!
“As for scholarships, like the other schools, we will raise outside funds to provide scholarships for families that have experienced a job loss or other such circumstance.”
Yeshivat He’Atid’s projected tuition represents a nearly 40 percent cut over other area day schools. It is a big reason why the new elementary school is generating such excitement while still essentially in the planning stage."

Bat Torah girls high school won’t reopen in September - The Jewish Standard
Bat Torah girls high school won’t reopen in September - The Jewish Standard: "In 2008, the school moved from Suffern, N.Y., to the former Frisch School building in Paramus, renting the space from Frisch (which had moved to new quarters) and subletting some of it to Ben Porat Yosef, an elementary school. The roles were reversed when Ben Porat Yosef took over as principal tenant.
Bat Torah had planned to move to the Jewish Center of Teaneck this summer and prepare 11 classrooms there for the beginning of the school year.
But instead, said Bak, “we have until the end of the month, which is this week, to clear out of the Frisch building. I have invited a few yeshivot to ‘inherit’ whatever items they can use.” The remaining items will be sold."

Alisa M. Flatow Yeshiva High School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "In May 2011, the school had planned to move to the Teaneck Jewish Center. On July 25, 2011, it was reported that the school would not be opening for the 2011-2012 academic year. Mrs. Miriam Bak, the principal, cited an unexpected drop in 11th grade enrollment and higher than expected moving costs as the reasons for closing."

FrumFind.org » Blog Archive » High Level Ideas Down to the People.: "Joseph however while he was also a righteous person was also closer to the level of the real man in the street sort of Jew. In other words, while Yaakov was clearly a Tzadik close to Hashem, and was thus able to accomplish the will of G-d, Joseph however was closer to the real Jew, who ended up living in Egypt. Now, R. Rosenblatt continued in his explanation of Rabbi Shmuel di Ozeda’s idea, Moshe’s spirituality was closer to that of Yaakov’s in that he was in a sense removed from the every day sensibility of the common Jewish man. Indeed one could imagine (my own thought is being explained here) that in order to be so close to the mind, thoughts and will of G-d, that it indeed must even on some level be a necessary qualification to be somewhat aloof from the mindset of even the most righteous of the common man."
