6 Tips on How to Write a Character Reference - wikiHow

6 Tips on How to Write a Character Reference - wikiHow: "Make use of a three-part format for the letter. The first paragraph can be a formal introduction, where the reader learns about the writer. The second part can be the body, where the basic message gets transmitted. A conclusion ties the letter together and brings it to a close appropriately."

4 Ways to Discover Your Strengths | Entrepreneur.com

4 Ways to Discover Your Strengths | Entrepreneur.com: "Using these four tips, you can learn to recognize your core strengths. Here's how:

1. Watch for signs of excitement. When you engage in an activity you are truly good at, your excitement is visible. Your pupils dilate, your chest is broader, your speech is fast and fluid, and your arms spread wider. "You can see someone feels alive and motivated when they're using a core strength," Kashdan says.

How to Value Your Startup | Entrepreneur.com

How to Value Your Startup | Entrepreneur.com: "If investors are telling you that your startup is worth $1 million, then that's what it's worth. You might think it's worth more. You might even know it's worth more because your company may have more than $1 million is liquid assets, or more than $1 million in receivables, or more than $1 million in sweat equity. But if you're unable to raise money for your startup with a valuation above $1 million, then you'll have to accept the market valuation.

However, this isn't always true. If you raise money from relatives and friends rather than professional investors, it's possible that your company has been overvalued or undervalued (more likely, overvalued)"

The circadian cycle: daily rhythms from behaviour to genes : Article : EMBO reports

The circadian cycle: daily rhythms from behaviour to genes : Article : EMBO reports: "Increased incidence of radiation-induced cancers occur in Period 2 (Per2) mutant mice (Fu et al, 2002), and Clock mutants tend to develop obesity (Turek et al, 2005). Whether and how these pathologies are related to defective clock functions is not known, but lack of coordinated metabolic regulation might be part of the cause. When constructing a network of feedback loops in computer simulation, it is quite difficult to establish conditions that prevent chaotic behaviour (Roenneberg & Merrow, 2002)—these special conditions seem to have evolved in the form of the circadian clock. Among them is not only endogenous rhythmicity but also conditional responsiveness to environmental stimuli, which is necessary to prevent chaotic behaviour."

The circadian cycle: daily rhythms from behaviour to genes : Article : EMBO reports

The circadian cycle: daily rhythms from behaviour to genes : Article : EMBO reports: "What is it good for?
Circadian clocks allow organisms to anticipate and 'prepare for' environmental changes, thereby increasing their fitness. For example, a photosynthetic machinery that is already geared up when the first sunrays appear will harvest more energy. A consequence of this logic is that the clock's benefits are most obvious under entrained conditions. "

FactCheck.org : Context Included: Obama on Iran

FactCheck.org : Context Included: Obama on Iran: "McCain’s new ad, released on Day 3 of the Democratic National Convention, quotes Obama saying that Iran is a "tiny" country that "doesn’t pose a serious threat." It implies that he fails to see Iran’s threat to Israel.

The picture changes dramatically when Obama’s full quotes are considered:

Obama actually said of Iran, Cuba and Venezuela: "These countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union" (emphasis ours).
Likewise, he said those countries don’t pose a serious threat to the United States "the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us.""

He's found it: He and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad agree that what the Israelis say is "noise."

Block out the "noise" coming from the Israelis. Not a healthy attitude to take toward a singularly persecuted people.

In "Mein Kampf," Adolf Hitler declared that the outset of World War I was a lost opportunity "for proceeding against the entire fraudulent company of these Jewish poison-mongers of the nation." Germany, he said, "should have dealt summarily with them without the slightest consideration for the clamor that would probably arise.""

The expression is chewing what has already been chewed. The premise of reincarnation is elucidated and expounded upon in this book. The past, present and future as explained as karmic reactions explains how so much of what goes in today's world is so mundane, mainly because we have been there and done that many times before.

Chewing what has already been chewed. "

(99) Yom Tov Glaser

(99) Yom Tov Glaser: "for us all to "accept" someone's essence. The idea being their "essence" is who they truly are. I believe that these days there is a great deal of hatred amongst groups, within communities, and nations. I believe I have heard somewhere that it was "hatred for no reason" that was the cause of the destruction of the 2nd Holy Temple? If one group, community, or nation specifically defines themselves as hating another group, community or nation, then I would think it would be extremely difficult fot the "hated" group, to like the other group. So consider this problem, if group X, exists simply to destroy group Y- (for no particular reason) how can group Y "transcend the natural reciprocal hatred" and not allow themselves simply to hate group X? Setting this up as an equation works"

The Death Of The Spec | TechCrunch

The Death Of The Spec | TechCrunch: "During the PC years, specs also mattered because there was one common dominant force in computing: Microsoft. Because Windows was everywhere, you could fairly reliably gauge the performance of one machine against another. But with the rise of the Mac and more importantly, smartphones and tablets, you can’t as easily stack machines up against one another performance-wise.

My MacBook Air doesn’t have the specs of a brand new HP PC laptop — but it still feels faster. Maybe it’s OS X, or maybe it’s the solid state drive. Point is, consumers don’t and shouldn’t care. They care about which machine will boot faster and which will be easier to navigate. Time to web matters."

Liane's Dvars -- Season ב

Liane's Dvars -- Season ב: "G-d is a very touchy subject.  We live in a time where almost anything goes, but one mention of the word and you’re categorized as either an unthinking freak, a scientific atheist.  We often avoid the word altogether, leaving our spirituality to fate, destiny, or messages from the universe.  Rarely will we assign such awesome powers to a force that has a name.  Or a purpose for sending those messages.

Because if we did, the ramifications would be cataclysmic.

When people ask me why I became “religious” I often correct them and explain how I became religious.  But the why?  The answer to that is easy.  I think it’s the right thing to do. "

Editors Note: Its's nice to see other blogs out there sharing their own personal experiences from the point of view of becoming observant of Jewish religious traditions later in life.

Holding back on Syria just helps Iran close in on nukes | Fox News: " Iranian regime has seen a world community unwilling and unable to stop a ruthless dictator from killing his own people. And Iran’s leaders have likely concluded that the international community will never take meaningful action to stop its nuclear weapons program.

The reasons for the world’s inaction in Syria are myriad.

Major powers such as Russia and China would apparently rather see Assad murder his own people than see Syria become a precedent for possible action against their autocratic regimes. The Arab League is divided among sectarian blocs and seems weary of Western military intervention after Libya."

Five Leadership Lessons From James T. Kirk - Forbes

Five Leadership Lessons From James T. Kirk - Forbes: "same drive for knowledge that drove Kirk to the stars also caused him to learn that bit of information, and it paid off several years later.

In the same way, no matter what your organization does, it helps to never stop learning. The more knowledge you have, the more creative you can be. The more you’re able to do, the more solutions you have for problems at your disposal. Sure, you might never have to face down a reptilian alien on a desert planet, but you never know what the future holds. Knowledge is your best key to overcoming whatever obstacles are in your way."

...Kirk’s reputation at the Academy was that of a “walking stack of books,” in the words of his former first officer, Gary Mitchell. And a passion for learning helped him through several missions. Perhaps the best demonstration of this is in the episode “Arena,” where Kirk is forced to fight a Gorn Captain in single combat by advanced beings. Using his own knowledge and materials at hand, Kirk is able to build a rudimentary shotgun, which he uses to defeat the Gorn."

AFP: Clinton warns of 'destabilizing' Iran options: "ran said last week that talks would open on April 13 with six powers -- Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States -- in the first such negotiations in more than one year.
But Russia said Monday that the date and venue have not been definitively set, leading the United States to say that Iran was sending mixed signals.

AFP: Clinton warns of 'destabilizing' Iran options

AFP: Clinton warns of 'destabilizing' Iran options: "You have two very difficult paths here," Clinton told a dinner in Norfolk, Virginia, where she was on a day trip to visit the only NATO command in the United States.
Clinton, who traveled over the weekend to Turkey and Saudi Arabia, voiced concern that a nuclear-armed Iran would trigger an arms race in the region.
"We're going to be looking for a way to try to convey the legitimate fears that people in the region have about what comes next. Because if Iran were ever to get a nuclear weapon, the countries in the region are going to buy their way to one as well," Clinton said."

I my opinion the benefits of decisive and swift military action far outweigh the consequences of not acting.

Psychiatrist Twerski reflects on reaching 80 - The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle: "His latest is “Gevurah: My Life, Our World, and the Adventure of Turning 80” (Shaar Press, 272 pages, $22.99).

In many respects, Twerski’s book asserts the traditional Torah-centered moral values and mentshlikayt (common decency) of the Chassidic masters. But he also tackles the social and spiritual problems of today, along with guidance about raising children in the Internet age, weaving them together seamlessly."

It's painful to use your own money, especially when you'd rather spend it on groceries. But that's what makes it a good thing. You get really smart with how you spend it. You say, "We really need to buy this software solution." And then you say, "Is this the right one? Can we find a cheaper version? Can we build it ourselves?"

You start to do a lot of research so you can spend less money or can learn a skill that will save you money over the long term. I figured out how to do our financials for Clariwebs by reading a book on QuickBooks. I use those skills even today."

Benyamin Tripp - Google+ - Introducing the Google+ Start-Up Guide I have been having…: " I have seen many guides out there that attempt to lower the learning curve but no one wanted to go read a multi-page article about how to use a social network.

And so I decided to give it a try, with a short presentation instead, almost like an intro video.

I have been spending the whole summer freelancing as a full time job and wanted to use my design and user experience skills toward a fun side project that would let me go crazy. I wanted to create something that tells you only the bare minimum of what you need to know to get started and something that is easy to digest. Over the past week, what started as a small side project became my main project.

Bad Customer Management Skills? What's the Big Deal?

Bad Customer Management Skills? What's the Big Deal?: "The recent Bank of America debacle is proof positive that we consumers have been "nickel and dimed" to death by usurious fees. Making your customers bear the brunt of every little increase in your cost of doing business, so you can keep your profits at record highs, just won't work. Whether it is a $5 fee for using a debit card or $40 maintenance fee on an IRA, or anything other trifling fee, enough is enough.

9. Double Prices for the Same Product or Service

If you want to know how well this won't work, take a look at what happened when some marketing genius at Netflix decided that customers really wouldn't mind paying double for the same service they had before"

Why College Debt, Entrepreneur and Success Can Be Used in the Same Sentence

Why College Debt, Entrepreneur and Success Can Be Used in the Same Sentence: "Scott Gerber has penned an interesting article for the Huffington Post. He alleges that a collective student loan debt of $1 trillion bars Millennials – aka members of Generation Y or the Trophy Generation – from following up on entrepreneurial dreams that would let them “actively take part in any job creation solution.” Gerber goes on to decry the sidelining of educated “entrepreneurially-charged individuals” – ostensibly because they cannot afford to start businesses with crushing debt hanging over their heads.

There is, of course, an answer to the problem. In fact, this answer has been around since 2007, when the Bush Administration created the Income Based Repayment (IBR) scheme for student loan borrowers. Students with crushing debt could cap federal student loan payments at 15 percent of their incomes and then take up to 25 years to repay the loans. "

The Man Behind Gingrich’s Money - NYTimes.com

The Man Behind Gingrich’s Money - NYTimes.com: "$22 billion, presides over a global empire of casinos, hotels and convention centers whose centerpiece is the Venetian in Las Vegas, an exuberant monument to excess with canals, singing gondoliers and acres of slot machines. That fortune is a wellspring of financial support for Mr. Gingrich, who has benefited from $17 million in political contributions from Mr. Adelson and his wife, Miriam, in recent years, including $10 million in the last few weeks that went to a “super PAC” supporting him.

The question of what motivates Mr. Adelson’s singular generosity toward the former House speaker has emerged front and center in the campaign. People who know him say his affinity for Mr. Gingrich stems from a devotion to Israel as well as loyalty to a friend. A fervent Zionist who opposes any territorial compromise to make way for a Palestinian state, Mr. Adelson has long been enamored of Mr. Gingrich’s full-throated defense of Israel"

Predators versus prey in the startup ecosystem | Techi.com

Predators versus prey in the startup ecosystem | Techi.com: "The “Startup Sea” is broad and loaded with life. There are those who are considered predators, which means someone has to be the prey. It’s a self-sustaining culture as long as there’s enough people (and dollars) looking for “the next big thing” coming into our lives. That part, at least, seems to be consistent.

Everyone from angel investors to tech bloggers play a role. It can be an ugly process to create something wonderful.

This graphic by our friends at Udemy examines this ecosystem and makes the distinct roles come to life. Click to enlarge."
